UAE-based Bukhatir Group has announced the relaunch of its Tunis Sports City mega project, to be constructed on a 250-hectare site in the capital of Tunisia.

The announcement was made at a press conference by Salah A Bukhatir, chairman of the Sharjah-headquartered company, and Afif Bejaoui, the CEO of the group’s Tunisian subsidiary.

The company said the project will be built on the shores of the Lac de Tunis and will include a stadium, four sports academies, a nine-hole golf course, six hotels, a 20 hectare park with pedestrian walkways, a residential compound, a mall, a business zone, and a 3km-long corniche with entertainment and water sports facilities.

Bukhatir said the huge project will offer a “new modern face” to the Tunisian capital, adding: “We are delighted with the strong support provided by the Tunisian authorities to give a new impulse to the Tunis Sports City project, which is a high priority for us.

“This sign of confidence strengthens our motivation and ambition for Tunisia.”

Bejaoui added: “In addition to its multi-dimensional and ecological vocation, Tunis Sports City will generate tens of thousands of direct and indirect jobs and significant additional revenues for the relevant municipalities.

Potential foreign investors will also be able to enjoy a wide range of benefits, which will give a great impetus to their commitments in Tunisia.”

Established in 1974, the Bukhatir Group operates in 14 countries worldwide and employs more than 5,000 people.

It has been reported that the first stage of the project is set to be ready by 2026, with the entire project completed in 2031.

The mega project had been stalled for 15 years due to the 2008 global financial crisis, Tunisia’s 2011 Arab Spring protests, and political and economic instability in the country, according to reports.
